Backwoods Gallery

About

Since Backwoods Gallery opened in the back streets of Collingwood in 2010, we’ve played an integral role in the development and promotion of the once fledgling Australian street art scene; produced 80+ exhibitions, countless public arts projects, murals and publications while remaining fiercely independent and self funded; nurtured maverick artists into MONA celebrated and NGA collected artists to form a world-class family of talented, high profile and (occasionally) hard to access artists; and gained a global community of like-minded followers.

History

Backwoods Gallery opened in the back streets of Collingwood in 2010 with the purpose of exhibiting contemporary art by emerging artists from Australia and around the world. Backwoods was founded by members of the Everfresh Studio and 25 Easey St community. The name ‘Backwoods’ was taken from an early Everfresh group show, rolling papers & our location – the depths of Collingwood.

Over the last 14 years our founders and the collective of artists we represent have grown in their artistic practises - from beginnings in the local graffiti and street art scene into the contemporary art world shown in galleries and public spaces around the globe. This growth has been mirrored in the path of the gallery’s curatorial process and the art that we enjoy exhibiting. Backwoods will continue to be a friendly and open-minded place that exhibits the works we love.

Collect Art. It’s fun.
