STRANGE MAKEUP is a collection of works on wood that blur the line between sculpture and painting. Utilising simple building materials such as wood, limestone, polymer and paint, Routledge creates these three dimensional works to capture a sense of deformity and tension. The symbolism of the smiley face has become even more apparent in these works, whilst also transforming and evolving beneath blemishes and blisters. Expressive and moody in appearance and colour, the paintings become semi-flat statues and reflections. Adopting deep and dreamy pigments that are meticulously blended between each other, these paintings are portraits, mirrors, and reflections of our bizarre human condition.
